Progress on autism strategy

IMG_4834Health Minister Edwin Poots has launched a draft autism strategy and action plan, aimed at achieving improved outcomes, services and support for people with autism, their families and carers. The strategy covers 2013-2020 and the action plan refers to 2013-2015.

“I must express my appreciation for the effort which has gone into getting such a comprehensive document in place,” Poots stated.

“I believe that, working collectively, we can build on the good work that has already been achieved. An important element of that will be to raise awareness about autism and how we all have a contribution to make in supporting those with autism and their families and carers to be full participants in our society.”

An estimated 5,000 children and 15,000 adults are affected by autism in Northern Ireland.  The main thrust of the strategy will be ensuring that all parts of government work together to support people with the condition.

The strategy is required by the Autism Act which started as a private member’s Bill by SDLP MLA Dominic Bradley and received royal assent in May 2011.  Legislation was introduced following campaigning by Autism NI and other charities.  The rationale for a new law, though, was questioned by the UUP and the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety, partly as this could lead to specific legislation (and therefore litigation) for a range of other medical conditions.

Consultation on the draft strategy runs to 15 March 2013.
