Enabling Shared Services

Colin-Hamill How eircom is enabling Public Sector Collaboration across the UK.

The rise of Cloud Computing, Shared Services and Collaboration Technology over recent years are just some of the factors that have changed the way that ICT services are consumed and the way that people communicate and do business together. These technologies are providing businesses and public sector organisations with opportunities to reduce costs while at the same time improving services and productivity.

Northern Ireland has been at the forefront of technology adoption over recent years. The Northern Ireland Civil Service’s (NICS) Enterprise Shared Services programme is seen as an exemplar across Europe and we have recently embarked on the implementation of the largest education cloud service in Europe for our 1,100 schools.

The adoption of Cloud and Shared Services raises the importance of the network infrastructure that supports the new services. With the centralisation of applications and computing power comes the challenge of ensuring reliable connectivity to these services and a consistent user experience regardless of the device the person is using or their location.

Belfast-based eircom UK has identified a niche in this area and provides a Pro-active Network Management Service where all elements of the network and associated infrastructure are monitored on a minute by minute basis through the use of leading edge systems and highly skilled engineers.

Colin Hamill of eircom UK explained: “The network is now more critical than ever and customers are seeking a step change in network availability, performance analysis and service delivery. We have developed systems, engineering skills and a service culture which means that our customers don’t have to think about the network anymore.”

eircom UK has seen rapid growth since its entry to Northern Ireland in 2007 and now employs over 50 highly skilled staff in its Belfast office. The company has been awarded a place on the UK Government Public Services Network framework, as one of 12 companies who can provide connectivity services to create a network of Public Sector Networks which will lead to an open, collaborative environment for all UK Public Sector employees.

eircom UK will continue to grow the Belfast operation by exporting its unique service offering to local government authorities in Great Britain who are starting on the journey of Sharing Services and collaborating across local and central government.
