Do you have the power to save a life?

HS1 B2B Small

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is the leading cause of death in the UK, accounting for an estimated 76,000 deaths each year.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest is serious. It means that the person’s heart has stopped pumping blood and they need help, fast. SCA can happen to anyone, anywhere, anytime and it can strike without warning.

The most important elements in the treatment of SCA are to provide quality CPR and a rapid shock to the heart called defibrillation. An automated external defibrillator (AED) helps anyone to provide defibrillation quickly.

For every minute that goes by without defibrillation chances of survival fall by at least 10 per cent, so there is a very real advantage of having an AED on-site. Does your organisation have an AED installed? Are you equipped to save a life?

Cardiac Services is committed to raising awareness of sudden cardiac arrest and the importance of public access defibrillation in Northern Ireland.

Local survivor, Lynda Donaldson from Boardmills, Co Down, tells her story. “One day in my life I will never forget, but I am very glad to be able to remember. On the 17th January 2013, I had an out of hospital cardiac arrest on the street in Saintfield. It came without warning and as yet no cause determined. How amazing that almost immediately I had help from my two life savers. The first was Michelle, who administered good quality CPR, and the second was Phil, who had a Philips HeartStart portable defibrillator. One shock, a little more CPR and I was resuscitated, before the emergency services arrived. I went on to make a good recovery.

“Quick action from my heart heroes, good quality CPR and the Philips HeartStart Defibrillator saved my life. In my view, every community, school, sports club and public building should have defibrillators. They should be as commonplace as fire extinguishers.”
