Listening and committed to our community

Journey-Project How George Best Belfast City Airport builds lasting relationships with the community.

As one of the largest employers in Belfast, George Best Belfast City Airport is acutely aware of the environment that it operates within and is committed to supporting the community.

A comprehensive Corporate Responsibility Strategy is central to our business and within this there is a strong emphasis on young people and schools.

Since its inception in 2009, our Community Fund – introduced to protect residents by fining airlines for operating late flights has invested almost £100,000 into more than 50 youth projects supporting young people across South and East Belfast and North Down.

Our commitment to a number of ongoing programmes with groups and schools in the area has enabled the airport to support and build a strong relationship with the community we serve. Staff from all levels at the airport regularly give time to our community funded projects and our adopted schools.

The airport’s ‘High Fliers’ scheme, which will provide apprenticeships to help 10 young people gain valuable work place skills, was recently launched by both the Employment and Learning Minister, Stephen Farry, and the Lord Mayor of Belfast, Alderman Gavin Robinson.

The initiative will provide young people between the ages of 16-24 with up to two years of work experience in areas such as human resources, business administration, customer service, retail, hospitality and catering.

The scheme is another step that the airport has taken to ensure our Corporate Responsibility Strategy remains truly reflective and is supportive of current social needs.

Continually improving the airport’s environmental performance across our business and the wider community remains an important objective.

Belfast City Airport has a dedicated Environment Executive who has implemented policies to minimise waste and maximise efficiency, having a significant impact on how the airport operates within its environment.

An open door policy is operated at the airport for anyone who wishes to discuss any element of our operations.

Our Community Newsletter, containing up to date information about the airport and its operations, is distributed to 24,000 neighbouring households in Belfast several times a year. In addition to this, social media channels are in operation to directly liaise with members of the community and address any issues that may arise.

Listening and ensuring corporate responsibility is at the centre of all our operations has allowed us to build lasting relationships with the community.

Our continued investment as a facilitator and as a significant employer ensures that we have an airport of which our community can be proud.
