Serving people and places

DK May 13 An overview of Interserve’s work in the province.

Interserve is one of the world’s foremost support services and construction companies, operating in the public and private sectors in the UK and internationally, delivering construction, facilities management and frontline services. Interserve’s vision is to redefine the future for people and places and the company is committed to strengthening the health and welfare to work aspects of its business.

Interserve has a longstanding track record of working in successful partnerships with companies in Northern Ireland, and has been serving communities throughout Northern Ireland since 1999, including:

• investing in the construction and operation of schools and colleges in Dungannon, Omagh, Strabane, Derry, Portglenone, Downpatrick and Belfast;

• investing in the construction and operation of the new acute hospital at Enniskillen; and

• providing cleaning services to Sainsbury’s, Argos, HSBC, Boots and Homebase.

Aidan McCuaig, Regional Director, Interserve Support Services Northern Ireland, said: “Interserve’s operations have created hundreds of jobs for the Northern Ireland economy. We currently directly employ over 400 staff across Northern Ireland, and our delivery partners for our construction and support services activities have created and sustained many more jobs, training opportunities and apprenticeships.”

Health

The £276m South West Acute Hospital at Enniskillen opened in June 2012. With single rooms for every patient, it is the first facility of its kind in Northern Ireland and is the first new hospital to be built in Northern Ireland for over a decade.

Interserve invested £7.8 million towards financing the construction of the hospital and will be providing estates and grounds management and help desk services totalling £75 million over a 30-year period. This project has already achieved some significant social outcomes, including:

• 752 new jobs created;

• 41 graduate and undergraduate placement opportunities;

• 95 apprentices employed across the local supply chain; and

• 1,610 local jobs sustained.

Education

Interserve has worked with Northern Ireland construction partner O’Hare & McGovern on education projects. St Genevieve’s High School in Belfast was opened in 2002. Since then Interserve has built and maintained a further nine schools, with St Patrick’s Grammar School in Downpatrick opening in 2011.

The future

Interserve is firmly committed to growing its business operations across Northern Ireland, and is now seeking to work with the Department for Employment and Learning through the new adult return-to-work programme Steps 2 Success to be tendered in summer 2013.

Commenting on the Steps 2 Success programme, David Knowles, Development Director, Interserve Strategic Partnerships, said: “We believe that the new programme has the potential to support more people than ever before to find and stay in work. With our track record of successful welfare delivery in GB and our structure as a large employer in Northern Ireland, we believe we can bring together our expertise in frontline services together with our track record as an employer across Northern Ireland.

“We are committed to securing the very best delivery model for the programme, through engaging with local delivery partners, strategic stakeholders, and employers, and through following the mantra ‘By Northern Ireland, for Northern Ireland’.

“We very much look forward to having the opportunity to demonstrate our commitment to Northern Ireland through this, and other frontline service opportunities.”
