School enhancement funding boost

Funding has been secured by the Department of Education for a further six schools to proceed with their construction on the school enhancement programmes.

In order to continue the ongoing investment in Northern Ireland’s school estate the department has found a further £14 million. Acknowledging the fact that the education budget has suffered due to financial cuts in recent years the Education Minister, John O’Dowd MLA was pleased to announce this essential funding that he feels is neccessary if we are to “continue to provide a quality education environment.”

“The announcement I am making today reflects prudent in-year management of the limited capital resources I have available to me at this time. This will bring the total number of school enhancement programme projects on site to 34.”

The schools that will benefit are: St Mary’s Grammar School, Magherafelt; Victoria College, Belfast; Sacred Heart Grammar School, Newry; Anahorish Primary School, Toomebridge; St Columb’s College, Derry and St Bernard’s Primary School, Newtownabbey.

The School Enhancement programme was announced in 2013 for construction projects costing between £500,000 and £4,000,000 and is designed to meet pressing needs in schools where a new capital build is not deemed deliverable.
