'Working for the achievement of high-quality service delivery through ICT'

DFP Future at Work

It is now apparent from the 2009 Budget that the public sector will have to deliver more for less and that ICT will play a major role in providing services in an era of reduced spending. In Northern Ireland the Executive is expected to find £122 million in savings by 2011 and remains committed to delivering high quality public services.

Responding to the Budget, Finance Minister Nigel Dodds identified some of the areas where he envisages savings can be made ‘for the short-term we must continue to prioritise frontline services and focus attention on maximising savings from back-office functions and potentially inefficient institutional structures’.

Clearly ICT has an important role to play – it has already been recognized that technology will be a core element of the government’s modernization agenda, with a number of projects currently being implemented. These include Network NI, Records NI, IT Assist all with the aim of centralising core IT services for the delivery of a high quality and cost effective service to government.
