firmus energy- taking natural gas further

With an investment of more than £100 million in the last 10 years, firmus energy is set to further demonstrate its commitment to the local economy.

Already in some 30 towns, cities and villages across Northern Ireland, the company has recently outlined plans for its latest Utility Regulator approved extensions to Richhill, Moy and Loughgall and their surrounding areas. In addition, if approved, firmus energy’s ambitious six year plan for 2017-2022 would make natural gas available to an additional 100,000 properties outside the greater Belfast area, right across its licensed areas.

Michael Scott, Managing Director explained: “We now have in excess of 1000 kms of gas pipe laid, servicing thousands of customers and we plan to invest £10 to £15 million annually to develop our network further. We are committed to a substantial on-going investment programme to improve the availability of natural gas across Northern Ireland. This helps secure the employment of our Antrim-based employees, as well as hundreds of local contractors, installers and support agencies.

firmus energy: committed to the future

“At firmus energy, we have a very straightforward set of values which we build into everything we do – these are Clarity, Empathy, Integrity and Teamwork. Importantly, we empower our employees to have the flexibility to ensure that we don’t follow a ‘rule’ to such a degree that it will break one of these values. Our customers are key to our continued success and so we have a duty and indeed responsibility to each and every one.

“We recognise that our people are our future and as such, invest in our environment and in our employees’ training and development to ensure that our team is the best that it can be, delivering beyond the expectations of our customers where possible,” he added.

firmus energy is part of the Investors in People programme and this year, has once again been accredited with the Silver statue highlighting its commitment to excellence. The company recently hosted and presented at the IIP Community Masterclass on ‘showcasing a high performance working environment – creating a cultural advantage’.

Since 2014, over 45 per cent of roles have been filled internally giving the team an impressive joint total of 240 years’ service, which is great news for customers as experience and knowledge is retained within the business. firmus energy also recognises that it is important to invest in the future and so it works closely with Queen’s University Belfast and the Ulster University to recruit placement students and develop an ongoing pipeline of talent.

Scott concluded: “As we move into our second decade investing in gas infrastructure and securing many thousands of new gas customers, we remain committed to investing in the Northern Ireland economy and will continue to expand our natural gas network into new areas and to make gas available to many more properties, both residential and commercial. This is great news for our team and we would like to thank them as well as our contractors, McNicholas, gas installers and gas retailers as well as the statutory and regulatory authorities, that have enabled us to deliver over six hundred thousand tonnes of CO2 savings each year to Northern Ireland, via our ever growing customer base.”
