Innovation in Delivering Public Services seminar
It is now apparent from the 2009 budget that the
public sector will have to deliver more for less in
Northern Ireland. The Executive is expected to find
£122 million in savings by 2011. It needs to find new
ways of delivering services to the citizen that are more
efficient, delivering cost savings to government as well
as better public services overall.
This seminar will examine how innovation can be introduced into the public sector. Innovation in public services has now become a priority as government is trying to fulfil increasing expectations on service delivery against this backdrop of increasingly limited resources.
This seminar is part of the agendaNi Northern Ireland ICT Innovation Forum and is the first event in the 2009/2010 programme. It will be opened by Bill McCluggage who heads up the Delivery and Innovation Division in the Department of Finance and Personnel. He will give an overview of some of the major innovative ICT projects that are currently transforming the public sector in Northern Ireland, including NI Direct, Records NI and IT Assist amongst others.
The seminar will also hear from Dr Michael Harris from NESTA who will detail some of the latest research and thinking into approaches to innovative public services. We are also pleased to welcome leading authority on innovation Charles Leadbeater, who will deliver the keynote address.
In addition, Robert Scott from PricewaterhouseCoopers
will explore how ICT can be successfully used as a lever
for transformational change. The Department of
Agriculture and Rural
Development will present a case
study of a successful ICT project that has delivered real
results. Delegates will also hear from Paul Wickens,
Department of Finance & Personnel, about the role that
shared services will play in helping to achieve efficiency
in the public sector.
Another key feature of the seminar will be break out groups, facilitated by Charles Leadbeater, with the objective of producing outputs utilising the collective knowledge and experience of all seminar participants. The event seeks to be interactive – delegates will benefit from a high level of engagement between both the speakers and fellow delegates.
